Zonta Key West News
The Zonta Club of Key West will hold its 35th Annual Radio Day on Friday, April 28th from 5:30 to 8:00pm, at the BottleCap Lounge, 1128 Simonton Street. A live remote broadcast by Rude Girl on WEOW 92.7 will showcase pre-recorded radio spots by local businesses that support the Club’s mission. The event includes music by Total Recall; an outdoor block party with grilled hamburgers and hotdogs contributed by Centennial Bank; a fabulous silent auction; celebrity bartenders; and a reverse Chance Drawing with a $4,500 Grand Prize. You need not be present to win!
Proceeds from the event support Zonta scholarships for Key West High School girls and local women; the Heart Health Initiative which offers free heart health screenings to 80 local women annually; and our newest project, Journey to Success, which offers hands on training and practical tips to women and high school students to assist them in procuring employment and advancing their careers.
Only 250 of the $50 Chance Drawing tickets will be sold, awarding $100 prizes for the 1st, 50th, 100th, 150th, 200th and 249th tickets drawn and $4,500 to the final ticket drawn, or a chance to win a three night stay in Orlando.

The Zonta Club of Key West will hold its Annual ABC (Awareness Breast Cancer) 5K Walk/Run starting at 8:00 AM on Saturday, November 5th at Salute Restaurant on Higgs Beach, with registration beginning at 7:00 AM. The event raises money to cover mammograms, thin-prep pap tests, and other diagnostic and preventive measures for women in the Lower Keys, which has some of the highest incidence of breast cancer because so many workers living here have no healthcare coverage.
“The money raised from this event all goes to providing these important preventive services for women who otherwise cannot afford them, so this event literally saves women’s lives here in the Keys. We’ve been able to provide over 3,000 mammograms to local women over the past 23 years and have never turned any woman in need away,” said Lisa Benfield, President of the Zonta Club of Key West. Women who need services can get them with a Zonta voucher available through the Monroe County Health Department and Womankind.
Theme Runs is assisting in managing the 5K race and prizes will be awarded for the best female and male runners and walkers in age categories. Teams of participants who raise funds with their own race sponsors also receive awards. Live music provided by the Parrot Heads adds to the festivities on race day.
“The Parrot Heads in Paradise Meeting of the Minds contribute to our community as major partners with Zonta for this annual event,” says ABC 5K Committee Chair, Penni Wise. Numerous local businesses, professionals and organizations also contribute as sponsors of the ABC 5K Race. A 50/50 chance drawing and a chance drawing for terrific prizes including a one week stay in Ocean City, New Jersey and jewelry donated by Emeralds International and Little Switzerland will be held following the race.
Registration is available online at http://www.zontakeywest.com/abc-walk. On-Site Pre-Registration will be held Friday, November 4th from 4:00-6:00 PM at Salute Restaurant.
