Martina Thurmond Ongoing Education Scholarship

The Zonta Club of Key West has opened the application period for the Martina Thurmond Ongoing Education Scholarship.  The $1,500 award will be provided to a woman at least 30 years of age enrolled as a new or existing student at Florida Key Community Collage, for use to re-enter the workforce, advance her current career or make a career change.   Applications must be received by July 28, 2017.  Please access the application in the link below.

Martina Thurmond

The Zonta Club of Key West awards this scholarship to honor the late Martina Thurmond,  a long time Keys businesswoman and founding member of the Zonta Club of Key West.  For nearly 60 years, she and her family owned and operated the Southern Keys Cemetery on Big Coppitt Key. Since 1982, she operated it solely, along with the family’s monument company, and in 2012 sold the business and retired … at age 92.

Martina was both a pioneer career woman and role model, as well as an active, respected member of Zonta of South Florida and it has been our honor to lend her name to this scholarship.

2015 Zonta KWHS Scholarship Recipients

1. Merili McCoy Leadership

Merili McCoy was a long time member of Zonta and a previous President. She was an esteemed leader in our community, and served as a City Commissioner. This scholarship is to encourage young women in our community to follow in her footsteps.

2. Math and Science Scholarship Award

Zonta believes education is critical to improving women’s status in all aspects of society. In order to achieve gender equality Zonta wants to encourage women to study subjects that will advance economic development and scientific discovery.

3. Z Club Scholarship Award

The Z Club is an important part of Zonta International. It encourages members to participate in community, school, and international projects. The Zonta Club of Key West will present a Z Club member with a scholarship to honor her achievements in these fields.

4. Education Scholarship

In keeping with our belief that education is a key to success, and good teachers play a major role in advancing education, Zonta is offering a scholarship to a young woman who will pursue a career in education with an eye to teaching at any level.

Women have made great strides in the pursuit of education, careers and leadership roles they were once denied; however, today, women are still more likely to be pouring the coffee in global boardrooms than sitting on the boards. In 2011, women held only 16.1% of the board seats at Fortune 500 companies according to the 2011 Catalyst Census. The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship program helps women pursue undergraduate and master’s degrees in business management and overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. Since the program’s inception, Zonta has awarded 399 Scholarships to women from 50 countries.
